Job Summary

Give a short summary of the duties and responsibilities of your job.
• The incumbent provides planning for the installation, maintenance and support of the centrally booked classroom digital assets/equipment inventory for classrooms on main campus and west campus. This is done by designing the digital classroom solution for the room based on design standards, scheduling availability, ordering parts, project timelines, etc.
• The incumbent designs the digital classroom solution, which involves determining the final configuration of equipment, equipment control interface, signal distribution system and the architectural room design or modification requirements. There are different solutions required depending on whether the room is a traditional classroom environment or an active learning room, in which case the incumbent works with the Centre of Teaching and Learning to finalize the space requirements and design a solution that meets the outlined requirements.
• The incumbent installs, services and maintains the electronic learning space presentation technology, which includes audio, video/data display and videoconferencing equipment. The typical equipment encountered includes desktop and laptop computers, video/data projectors, audio amplifiers, control interfaces, switching equipment, document cameras, pan/tilt/zoom cameras, lecture capture devices, test equipment, and laser projectors.
• The incumbent troubleshoots equipment problems accurately and efficiently by determining if the issues are due to a configuration or programming error, hardware failure, cabling issue or an end-user issue. This may involve working with service providers on an as-needed basis to test, isolate and repair faults that affect the quality and reliability of the classroom digital systems.
• The incumbent programs and upgrades firmware on control hardware, including switches, transmitters and receivers.
• The incumbent creates statements of work for the classroom and conference room builds, and requests quotes from vendors of record for equipment, cabling, amplifiers, distribution and display systems, podium and other required items.
• The incumbent responds to and corrects presentation technology problems during a class or event when requested. Examples include providing instruction to a user on the correct way to use the digital classroom technology via the telephone or in person, controlling the digital classroom equipment remotely from the desktop via the IP room control, diagnosing and fixing technical problems on the spot via site visit, and replacing equipment when necessary.
• The incumbent maintains an inventory of repair/replacement parts for classroom technology equipment and for computer sites/kiosks and provides customer-focused support to IT Services internal units and external departments across the Queen’s community.

Job Description

To fulfil your duties what knowledge, skills and specialized techniques are required? How would each be normally acquired? How long would it take to become proficient in each of the areas of your work?
• This position requires a three-year C.A.A.T. diploma in Electronics, Computers or relatable technology, or an equivalent level of education and demonstrated work experience in the role.
• Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a technologist support role, with preference given to experience in the area of audio-visual technologies.
• Experience in cabling, including shielded Cat6, multi-mode and single-mode fibre, and audio cabling. Experience with the configuration and implementation of Extron and Crestron solutions.
• Extron Control Professional certification.
• Crestron Certifications in DMX and programming.
• Advanced troubleshooting experience with switching components and communication issues between technologies in a classroom environment.
• Demonstrates quality crafts-work, excellent work ethic and pride in ownership of all operating, maintenance and service activation, including the proper use and care of all University property.
• Complies with all University policies and procedures, meets the requirements of University-sponsored development and training programs.
• Possesses a valid driver’s license and maintains a safe driving record.
• Exhibits strong customer service skills, interacts professionally with clients.
• Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills (English).
• Positively contributes to a collaborative team.
• Possesses the knowledge to identify and understand common occupational safety and health hazards in the workplace through the completion of various Health & Safety training programs, such as WHIMS, Confined Spaces, Standard, Asbestos Awareness, Fall Arrest, Working from a Ladder, etc.

Is it necessary in this position to oversee the work, or to instruct other staff? If so, what does this involve?
• The incumbent may be required to oversee the work and provide guidance on priorities and tasks for summer/junior staff.
• Regularly assigns tasks outside of scope to other teams such as the IT Infrastructure Services, IT Support Centre and the IT Applications Services groups. Instruction/demonstration may be required in this process.
• Provides instruction on the use of the classroom digital technologies to faculty and/or students.
• Ensures all tasks are within scope of requirements.
• Coordinates and oversees the work of contractors to ensure that all assigned tasks are completed and meet the defined standards.

What other people must you deal with in this job and why? (i.e. is there direct contact with students, teaching staff, other departments, and people outside the university community).
• The incumbent may interact with all faculty, staff and students who are users of the classroom digital technologies, as downtime may be required. Communication with faculty, staff and students is necessary to ensure an understanding of the duration and need for outages. Contact with end-users and vendor companies may also be needed during issue diagnosis.
• The incumbent works closely with the faculty and staff of the Centre for Teaching and Learning, as they share responsibility for the design and support of the teaching spaces on campus. They also frequently work with Project Managers and Departmental IT staff to complete approved internal projects and departmental requests.

How is your work assigned to you and how closely is your work checked by someone else?
• The incumbent completes work assigned from a variety of sources, such as iTrack issues (both internal to IT Services and external departments), project tasks assigned by a Project Manager, as well as self-directed tasks/projects.
• The Manager, Service Support (Digital Classrooms) sets priorities and goals for the incumbent.
• The incumbent works both independently and as a member of a small team

Are the sorts of problems encountered in this job usually covered by established procedures or do you frequently have to develop or invent solutions to problems yourself?
• Some work follows established procedure but there is frequent problem solving and the need to invent solutions, particularly when designing a digital classroom solution. There are often challenges in the unusual layout of a room or confined space, which requires some creativity in the design. With the evolution of technology and requirements varying between faculties, this can mean a lot of researching alternative technologies or experimenting with new types of devices to identify a viable solution for the case at hand. This often requires critical thinking and a creative response to the problems that are encountered.
• Ensures that standards are documented and adhered to and provides input into the development and/or changes of the standards.

Are you involved in establishing standard procedures? (Give examples)
• The standards are set by the Manager, Service Operations (Digital Classrooms) with input from the Digital Classrooms Technologist. There are areas where the incumbent is the subject matter expert when setting/modifying/creating a standard procedure, such as when there are changes in the industry-established technology standards.

What is the size of your department (i.e. #of classes for which you are involved with labs., # of students, # of staff you might come in contact with, # of technicians in department).
• IT Services consists of over 140 staff members, the Digital Classrooms team includes three technologists and technicians.
• This position supports over 130 centrally booked classrooms with digital (audio-visual) technology, many different meeting rooms and facilities, and is available to assist or support any member of the Queen’s community.
• There are over 200 locations on campus with electronic presentation equipment that require regular maintenance and upgrading.
• There are 3 computer classrooms, 3 public computer sites and 6 banks of computer kiosks, distributed across the Queen’s campus that require regular checking, issue reporting and/or repair or replacement of computer parts.

• Responsibility for the above equipment is shared across the Digital Classrooms team. The total value of the installed infrastructure exceeds $3,000,000.
• Computer sites are made up of 120 computers, monitors, keyboards and mice.

Give details of any unusual factors affecting this job? I.e. hazards, unusual working conditions, requirement for a high degree of manual dexterity etc.
• High degree of manual dexterity to reduce the risk of electrical shock (voltages as high as 26 kilovolts). Many electrical components are also heat generating.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with the potential for high-stress conditions.
• Ability to respond quickly and accurately in emergency conditions.
• Work in hazardous locations and maintain training to operate in such areas as:
o Confined spaces
o Spaces with asbestos
o Heights with the use of ladders, scaffolding, hoists and above ceilings
o Around electrical equipment
o Data closets
o Labs with radiation/biohazards/chemicals
• Ability to lift up to 70lbs.
• Overtime may be required.
• The role requires travel to all areas of the campus in all weather conditions to support digital classroom technology equipment needs. This may include (but not limited to) going up and down stairs, walking up to 15 minutes across main campus, etc.
